Echamos luz sobre los modismos problemáticos para los que estudian inglés
En episodio 21, hablaremos del verbo "do," que se utiliza con muchas expresiones. En este blog, ofrecemos el ejemplo de "do the math."
"Do the math" (hacer las cuentas) means that some has thought about the consequence of cost on a project or change of some kind. It often means that the person "doing the math" is not encouraged about starting (or later, continuing) the project.
Example:
Bernice: I understand that you want to open the restaurant on Sundays, but I've done the math. We have several good employees that will quit if we ask them to work on Sunday.
Joe: So you think it is a bad idea to have more customers because we are open on Sunday?
Bernice: You and I have trained these people for many months. They are good, profitable workers who like our schedule. It is not worth it to open the doors on Sunday and have fewer good employees to serve our food. I've done the math, and we would lose money very quickly.
