Support for episode 22, customer service:  The phrase "Did you have any other questions?"

How does one show respect in English? This is a topic we discuss in episode 22. We go through a practice dialog in English and then discuss it partially in Spanish, para que los oyentes hispanos puedan entender ciertas distincciones sútiles.

Un ejemplo de esta distincción es la pregunta "Did you have any questions?"

Did you notice that this question uses the past tense, "did?" On the phone, especially, where a caller may have been waiting, this is a better wording than the frequently utilized present tense version, "Do you have any questions?" "Did" suggests that the agent is checking on the well-being of the caller since their last interaction. Often, a caller must be placed "on hold" (en espera), and during the hold, he or she has developed questions. "Did" considers the time of the caller. "Do you have any questions?" may sound like the agent is ready to hang up (colgar), but is obligated to find out if the call must continue. If you are learning English to support customers, consider the phrase "Did you have any questions?"
