We wanted to go over some ways we show disbelief or astonishment in American English. Here are three common expressions that show increasing levels of disbelief and astonishment.
1) "You're kidding!" / "You're kidding me!" - (¡Estás bromeando!) We say this when we find something we hear surprising but we believe it is true.
Susan: Hey, the company is giving everyone $100.00 for Christmas this year!
Charlotte: You're kidding! That's great!
2) "Get outta here!" / "Get out of here!" - (¡Sal de aquí!) This is a common expression used for "I don't believe what you are saying is true."
Gabe: Have you heard that they are now selling houses made of ice?
Greg: Get outta here! That's ridiculous!
3) "Shut UP!" - (¡Cállate! pero con énfasis en la palabra 'UP') - This is used to express strong disbelief or strong astonishment. You're not really telling the person to stop talking, you're telling them you are astonished by what they are saying.
Patricia: My daughter was selected to be on the Olympic skiing team!
Tyler: Shut UP! That's fantastic news! Will she have to leave immediately to start training?
