As you advance in your English, you will begin to feel more and more ready to describe actions in the past. In English, regular past tense forms end in "-ed." There are THREE ways to pronounce this suffix in English, however: -d, -t, and -id.

In this episode, we provide many humorous and easy-to-understand examples of this variety of sounds. The verbs featured in this episode include:

called
seemed
cleaned

looked
asked
finished

and

wanted

Este episodio presenta algunos de los verbos más comunes en inglés, enfocando en el sufijo "-ed" y cuando se lo pronucia o "-d," "-t," o "-ed." Gabo y Goyo usan anécdotas y humor para proveer contexto y repetición.

[00:00:00] Welcome to Listen, Smile, and Noterindas. Home of the Intermediate English App, Disponible and No Te Rindas Podcast.US This is a podcast for Spanish speakers who want to improve their understanding or the native language of the United States

[00:00:19] We are two brothers, the United States and the American countries So we go, okay, I keep on me at Manomayor Goyo, Greg Greg my university played your university in American football last night Good morning. Yeah, UGA my team played the University of Tennessee your team and

[00:00:50] My team is currently number one in the country and they have not lost a football game in almost three years And my wife and I really love to watch UGA college football games because we met at UGA. We met at the University of Georgia

[00:01:12] 32 years ago something like that So watching games is special for us and I watched the game against your school gay blast night with my friend Nick

[00:01:25] And I I don't think that I don't think that you watched it so you would be interested to know that Dally parton and Peyton Manning came out during some part of the game and she sang Rocky Top and And he like escorted her like

[00:01:44] You know like a chambilon like a a true gentleman. I see Well, I hate that I missed that I was in school at the same time at the University of Tennessee as Peyton Manning was I did not know him but he's a very famous football player

[00:02:03] What's today's topic, Gaba? Today we're going to be focusing on some words that in the past tense Become difficult to pronounce because the way the end of the word sounds Can vary a lot even though they're basically spelled the same way on paper

[00:02:23] That's right. We've taken the list of most common verbs in English and we've chosen The most popular regular verbs in the prettrait in the past tense And that will keep our lists rather short and concise and neat today

[00:02:43] But we know that it'll be useful because these are things that all of us say regularly in English Yeah words like looked Asked and cleaned but before we get into that why don't we go over four vocabulary words?

[00:03:03] You can be listening for in some of the examples we give So one thing we're going to talk about today is the mess The mess is El des Astre or El des Ordin so we'll talk about a mess

[00:03:21] We're gonna talk about people doing something as the sun set as the sun set is Como al ponerse el sol o cuando el sol se puso es la sun set

[00:03:38] We're gonna talk about two people that broke up. They broke up if you broke up it is como separarse o romper con alguien And the last vocabulary word is a cute word and that is the word for cachorro And in English that is the word puppy

[00:04:31] Inos de cual episodio viene tu ejemplo por ejemplo El egiremos un recado para analizar en cada episodio Today we want to shout out several cities that are downloading our show Individuals in those cities, of course, are downloading our show

[00:05:11] We hope it is helping you to feel more comfortable with your English Today a special shout out to a regular listener in Katy Texas, Katy Texas Also Madrid Spain and Guadalajara, Halisco, Mexico El lugar de manan o estra banda favorita saludos a todos y gracias

[00:05:37] We also want to give a special thanks to council bluffs Iowa where we have gained several ointes recently Mil gracias Okay, so our first three regularly used verbs common popular verbs in English are seen Call and clean Which in the past tense would be seemed Called and Cleaned

[00:06:13] So with with these before we do an example These are words that are when they're in the past tense you can hear a D sound like a duh So we'll contrast that with some other examples that the ED and the end of those words kind of becomes a

[00:06:30] Sound and sometimes even becomes an id sound so these are just like you're tacking a D on to the end seemed Called Cleaned just adding that D sound. So let's let's listen to a little silly example When Paula called Steve he seemed normal on the phone

[00:06:56] But when she got to his apartment She found that he had cleaned the floor with ketchup She called out to him and he said I'm in the bedroom cleaning the walls with mayonnaise Wow, um, I hope that Paula called us like I addressed

[00:07:22] So again we hear Paula called Steve he seemed Normal so we don't say cult Steve or call it Steve or see-med normal or see-t Normal seemed normal Although that was not normal behavior. Was it go you know and I also notice with my

[00:07:46] Students who are learning English that It can be a challenge to say things like Lured or Hmm, so seemed Called just try that now if you can That end of the word Two consonant sound right we're two consonants are next to each other

[00:08:13] That seems to be a bit of a problem as you're learning English from Spanish It seemed to be You mean Exactly how about another example all right. Let's look at another one here When Francesca and Matt cleaned up the mess after the festival

[00:08:37] They seemed like a happy couple holding hands and laughing As the sunset however someone called Matt and when he answered his face went white Francesca and Matt broke up that very evening Huh, I wonder who called him Well all was not as it seemed

[00:09:09] It was Matt's best friend calling to say that Francesca had given him their two pet monkeys and it turns out The monkeys were the only reason they were staying together Result that came Los monos Fueron la Unica razon que se que daban juntos, no

[00:09:35] So again you heard Greg say I wonder who called him? I wonder who called him so it's a there's not a call it or cult kind of sound there Just tacking on the the consonant right after the consonant sound oh, so old

[00:09:54] That that is a tough to say if you've not said it a lot and Gabe is using the expression tacked on And uh Tacked on is like saying added Right it goes on to the end. Yeah, it goes on to the end of that word

[00:10:11] And it it leads us into our next set of words because tacked on sounds like it has a T on the end of it Rather than that D Sound so let's let's take a look at a few verbs that's in in a sound that sound like a

[00:10:28] sound so look becomes looked Ask becomes asked work becomes worked And finish becomes finished So these are all very very common verbs in English that you're gonna hear and use in the past tense looked asked Worked and finished so you'll hear that you don't say looked

[00:10:57] or ask it You say looked asked worked and finished. Okay, I'm finished Ha ha ha no no we we want to hear an example Gabe. Oh, okay well I guess I'm not finished Okay My girlfriend and I were planting flowers

[00:11:21] I looked at her and asked will we be finished soon? I want to check my Insta Woo I bet she liked that What did she say? She looked mad and said I can't believe you asked that

[00:11:40] I've finished nearly all of the flowers and you've only worked on like three or four Well, uh, what did you do then? I said well you're not my boss You're my girlfriend and then I got in my car and left

[00:12:00] And then I came back 15 minutes later from the coffee shop with a large coffee for her No, I bet she looked happy No, not really So again these kind of sneak in and of course it will become more natural You but at first think about whether you're saying

[00:12:25] Asked or ask it or if you're just plugging that tea right up against the sound for ask it same finished to me sound is a little bit easier Because you're you're just putting a tea on the Finished nearly all the flowers

[00:12:43] But worked and asked are both a little trickier because you've got this cut sound Asked worked yeah And it has to do with that last consonant Being voiced or voiceless so in the case of ask Asked the the case sound is not vibrating your vocal cords

[00:13:10] So that at the end must also then not vibrate them. It's harder to vibrate the vocal cords Afterwards, so that's why it's not ask it didn't But asked but in the case of seen Seamed the Is voiced or has vocal cords vibrating Okay, so seemed is

[00:13:37] You know is is a D a sound because that's also voiced and it's just easier to keep that Air going over the vocal cords. I guess we are we are a lazy species are we not we

[00:13:48] We notice across all languages that we like to do with our voice Whatever's the easiest so that that makes sense in English too That's not lazy that's efficient Yes, we like to be efficient as a species that's what happens better and don't insult my species

[00:14:10] Okay, so now we're gonna focus on Look at Asked Worked and finished again Gabe have you looked at our grocery bill? You ordered 76 bananas What happened? Sorry, I I finished the order without checking it. Are are you saying that I asked for 76 bananas on the grocery app?

[00:14:42] Yep my paper oh It turns out I typed 76 instead of six when I was filling out my order I don't know what we're gonna do with 76 bananas It's a shame that we can't give them to Matt and Francesca for their pet monkeys

[00:15:05] Because they you know broke up last week Yeah We snuck in a bonus one o' yentice you may have caught that I said It turns out I typed 76 instead of six and so type in's in the letter p

[00:15:26] Which is voiceless so of course instead of saying I type it or I typed 76 we say typed we just tacked that t so it's Sorry, I guess I'm overfuing Sorry

[00:15:42] Broken to beatbox there from the 80s so I finished the order on the app and use asked me have you looked at our grocery bill So I'm really glad this would have not really happened because as much as I love bananas

[00:15:57] I don't think I could eat 76 of them No, I think we would have a lot of flies fruit flies We did that All right, we're gonna try one other class of verb now and this is one where the sound is going to be a little different from

[00:16:16] Or like Gabe it's been explaining so well Because it's very common we're gonna use the word want want now and Gabe is gonna start us off with a little explanation and example So what is a little different than the previous two examples

[00:16:35] Because it we say ed instead of just tacking on a D sound or a T sound We actually say ed but it's it's really pronounced more like id so want becomes wanted wanted Wait becomes weighted adopt becomes adopted or effect becomes affected so

[00:17:03] Want is a very common word and you're going to have to use it and hear it in the past tense all the time So want becomes wanted instead of Wanted Wanted or want Wanted which I guess really wouldn't make much sense. All right listen to this example

[00:17:23] Carless and Anastasia wanted to adopt a puppy But her allergies affected her so much that they could not bring animals into the apartment at all Yes, I called and asked her if she was allergic to monkeys Or maybe bananas Or fruit flies

[00:17:56] All right, it's time for our quiz Kseketha in two cerebro and two mentee What is sticky in your brain today? Number one Gabe when Pola called Steve he a Seemed normal B Talked about college football or see Finished their conversation by saying I'll see you in six months

[00:18:36] And Steve was the guy that was washing his house with Condiments like mayonnaise and ketchup and stuff Oh When she called him he seemed normal so that that would be a letter A. He seemed normal That is correct All right, number two

[00:19:01] When Matt got a phone call his face went white Because he found out that A Francesca had bought 176 bananas B Francesca had given away their two pet monkeys Or see Francesca had cleaned his car With mustard

[00:19:34] Okay, so his face went white because he got a call and he found something out Okay, and okay, I don't think I don't think it was that she had bought those a bunch of bananas I did that accidentally with the stupid app

[00:19:52] His face went white because he was upset because B Francesca had given away their two pet monkeys It was B Congratulations you are two for two sir. You are gonna be our champion Well, let me give you one chance

[00:20:11] Goyo when I was in the garden with my girlfriend I looked at her and said A I want to become a famous TikTok creator B I want to check my Instagram C I want to go to the zoo to see the monkeys

[00:20:41] Gabe got in trouble with his girlfriend in that example Not because he wanted to become a famous TikTok creator And there was no zoo in our story today so He wanted to check his Instagram or you and this
